A Plus-sized Rant

IMG_6674So I have been on this planet for a few years now and my love for fashion has done nothing but increase. Skimming social media sites I always see different topics that talk about plus sized people (both positive and negative). Being a plus sized woman myself I have experienced both positive and negative reactions to my body. I’ve also been asked ridiculously stupid questions and had mind-numbing conversations with people about being plus sized (none of these people being of the plus-sized persuasion). This is the list of my most irritating plus sized convo topics.

1. Being plus-sized is so unhealthy. Why should they even advertise plus-sized models?
Yes. Being plus sized can be unhealthy. It has been proven. We know it. We have known it for a long time. Our doctors have informed us of the need for healthy eating and exercise. Believe it or not some plus-sized people are trying there hardest to lose the weight so they can be healthy.
ALSO. When you say healthy do you mean “skinny” or a proper weight based on medical opinion?
Being underweight can be just as unhealthy and unsafe as being overweight. You go from giving your body to much food and nutrients to starving your body of some or all of the nutrients it needs.
People need to stop mixing up healthy and skinny. They can be two completely different things.

2. Plus-sized models are so unrealistic.
Well you may not think it’s logical to have plus-sized models but think about this…
According to the OECD’s Obesity update June of 2014 the USA’s obesity percentage was 35%. Canada’s was 25%. It may not seem like much but that means that approximately 111.6 million Americans and 8.79 Canadians are considered obese or overweight. That’s a pretty descent market to sell to and a pretty decent market of people to advertise to. People like Tess holiday and Ashley Graham have paved the way for plus-sized women. Feeling beautiful shouldn’t just be for the other 65 or 75%.

3. Can plus-sized people even wear designer clothes?
Really?….Yes I have really had this conversation with someone….I….I actually can’t believe I stood and had this conversation….I dunno. Okay well…
High-end department stores like Neiman Marcus, Lord and Taylor, and Bloomingdales have plus-sized clothing. Also designers like Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and even Michael Kors have plus sized clothing. I would go on but it actually infuriates me thinking about it.

Frankly the whole body imagine discussion is a grenade. No it may not be healthy to be overweight but it is a part of life. You have no idea what a person is going through at that point in their life. I lost my aunt while she was fighting her fight with obesity. She was so absolutely desperate to lose the weight and to stop being criticized that she went for surgery and died as a result. She was an amazing and beautiful woman that had so much more to offer the world. So please just take a step back and actually think before you open your mouth.
